Ford House Museum and Visitor Center
The Ford House, run by the Mendocino Area Parks Association, was built in 1854 for Jerome Bursley Ford and his new wife. Learn about the history of the Ford family and about the history of the village of Mendocino at the Ford House. A museum as well as a Visitor Center, a stop at the Ford House is essential to any visit to Mendocino. In 1986, the Ford House operations were handed over to the Mendocino Area Parks Association, which has docent and volunteer programs that enable the Ford House to be open on a regular basis. The Ford House is more than a historic home and Visitor Center, it is an interpretive center for the beautiful and unique natural environment of the area and its district parks, and an educational center that informs residents and vistors of the history of Mendocino and the surrounding areas. Its gallery exhibits works of local artists--works that are appropriate to the seasons and that have an environmental theme.

Skunk Train-Sierra Railroad
Built as a logging railroad, the Skunk began as a logical vehicle for moving massive redwood logs to sawmills on the Mendocino Coast. Steam passenger service began in 1904 and was extended to Willits in 1911, and was discontinued in 1925 when self-powered yellow "Skunk" rail cars were inaugurated. The trains were quickly nicknamed for their original gas engines which prompted folks to say "You can smell 'em before you see 'em." More modern equipment was added in later years, many of which can still be ridden. The vintage 1925 M-100 motorcar-the only remaining train of its kind in use today-runs on the line year-round, as does the 1935 M-300 motorcar. They are joined by three 1950's diesel-powered engines and the famous Old No. 45 steam engine, a majestic 1924 Baldwin steam engine-the kind that kids dream about when they think of "trains". Moving at a leisurely pace, the trains pull covered cars and open observation cars, perfect for photography. The Skunk line runs 40 miles from Fort Bragg on the coast to Willits onHighway 101, or halfway to Northspur station and back. Along the way, thetracks cross 30 bridges and trestles and pass through two deep mountaintunnels, with stunning scenery in between. Excursions leave Fort Bragg everyday at 10:00 with summer BBQ's departing Tuesday through Saturday at 3:30pm. Call 800-866-1690 for more information and reservations or visit
