An all-day Ukulele Festival is planned for Saturday, April 14, when Mendocino Stories and Music Series joins The Caspar Community to illustrate the ukulele as a fun and friendly instrument. This is an “All Ages, All levels of interest and expertise event”. The day’s activities start at 10AM and will finish by 10PM.
Beginning at 10AM, ukulele instruction workshops, both beginning and intermediate levels, will be taught by Dennis Hudson at intermediate level and Denver Tuttle for beginners. After the lunch break there will be informal and formal jam sessions. Small break out groups first and then a jam session will be led by “The Ukeholics” from Anderson Valley. Before the dinner break, “The Jumping Flea” film by local film maker Paul Krauss will be shown.
Evening performances will start at 7PM, with a three 10-minute sets, including The Ukeholics, followed by two 45-minute sets featuring Hawaiian born Keo Skudlarick and Hui Arago accompanied by Lei Palaoa hula. Born and raised on O’ahu, Keo first played ‘ukulele at age five. Attending Humboldt State as a environmental science major, he has been performing at school and is now minoring in music. Says Keo, “I have mainly been playing and singing traditional Hawaiian music and approaching instrumental solos with a slack-key guitar style. I have written a few 'non-hawaiian' songs and I plan to include one of them in my set. Currently, all the other songs I plan on playing will be Hawaiian songs.”
Local favorites, Hui Arago will lead us home. Lead `ukulele player Dennis Hudson has been playing `ukulele over 20 years, and has studied under Hawaiian `ukulele master Herb Ohta. Marybeth Arago is the lead singer; her lovely voice is joined by Michael’s on harmony vocals. She also plays rhythm `ukulele. On Hawaiian slack key guitar (ki hö`alu), Michael Arago was heavily Influenced by the only music his Hawai`i-born mother played while he was growing up. He also hosts a Hawaiian music show on KZYX&Z, “Nä Mele O Hawai`i.”
