Gloriana Musical Theatre presents "RENT"
[details]
- RENT is about being young in New York City, being brave and being scared, being in love, and being in trouble...having hope for today and faith in tomorrow.
RENT's creator, Jonathon Larson, labored for seven years to develop his modern day answer to HAIR, as he put it, to "wake up a generation." He based his play on Puccini's LA BOHEME which focused on the harsh realities of tuberculosis in a group of 19th Century bohemians. Modern day RENT has HIV/AIDS at its core - the contemporary demon among a group of struggling artists in New York's East Village.
It's a rock musical and more. But tragically Mr. Larson died suddenly of an aortic aneurysm just hours after the musical's final dress rehearsal before opening at the New York Theatre Workshop. He was 35 years old.
RENT's popularity soared and the musical moved to Broadway. It earned the 1996 Pulitzer Prize for Drama and the Tony Award for Best Musical as well as the Obie, Drama Desk, and New York Drama Critics Circle awards.
15 of Mendocino County's finest young performers sing, act, and dance this iconic salute to bravery, love, and hope.
